I have a wired LAN connection in the laptop too so I can download updated
drivers ... I'll give it a try.

Did a completely clean install of XP on the laptop again last night and
used
none of the original Win2k drivers and software ... still no joy but will
try looking for the updated ORiNOCO drivers above.

Hmmm ... wonder if this could be part of my problem?
