Nah, the Kenlowe preheaters have only been around for a couple of years and are still available.
 
Check out the Land Rover mags for adverts - that's where they seem particularly popular (can't imagine why!)

Yes but these were out back when carbs where the norm and the overnight electricity usage would be less than the fuel consumed in the first minutes of running.
