I know how you feel ;-)

However, some years ago, I had to make someone, let's call him A,
redundant... against my better judgement. I actually thought we would be
better off getting rid of his boss, let's call him B.

B was my direct report, and he was, I still maintain, the cause of the
problem because it was his responsibility to drum up the work, and he
blatantly was doing things his own way WITHOUT getting results! Getting
results has always been the acceptable excuse for doing things your own
way in my teams ;-)

I ended up in several meetings with HR, and when push came to shove,
phoned up my director saying that I still believed we should get rid B
instead.

My director said, down the phone. "If you don't make A redundant
today,
I'll come down tomorrow and do it. Then I'll start disciplinary action
against you for not doing what I instruct you to."

I made A redundant. THAT was me being a wanker. I resigned shortly
afterwards...

Regards,

Mark

In which case they probably are. I reckon about 5% of my
employees
think I'm a wanker, which I can live with. If it got to 10% I
might
start to think it might be something to do with me. :-)
