I stumbled across this website:

www.homeplug.org

It's a consortium of 90 companies (some very big names)developing
standard, products etc for powerline networking.

Basically you can get upto 14MBS over your existing electrical wiring.

I for one am tragically quite excited at this prospect, devices (eg
PC adapators etc) should be available "fall 2001" in the US.
Don't
know about the UK.

It transpires, as usual, that there are several competing
technologies. Take a look at this article for a flavour:
