What sort of prices/size are they?
Something that fitted into a UK double is probably too small so I suppose
we're pretty free to use whatever shape/size seems best.

I would say graphics.  This possibly makes things more complicated though?
Text might be faster/cheaper to develop.

Deffinately.

> Do we need a light sensor to determin if the backlight is on

No.  If it's mains powered there's no reason not tho have the backlight
come
on every time it's used.

> How many keys do we want

Are there are similar designs we can look at?  Things like Next, Previous,
Enter, Cancel spring to mind.

> How do want the keys positioned, under lcd for menu operation ?

> Do we want a IR receiver in the unit

Would be nice but may complicate things.

> Do we want a local temperature sensor.

As above.

> What sort of conversations do we want it to have with other devices
