Well there are two very, very interesting questions and no easy answers!

Yes after some deliberation the AX1 is definitely superior to the A1, I had
one before going up to the AX1. much more controlled and balanced sound IMO
and not just as pug ugly either! Why oh why can Yamaha not design nice
looking units and why are their remotes just abysmal? The 70mm sound fields
are also better, not that I use them a lot, before Tim gives me into
trouble
;o) 6.1 in both DD and DTS is *definitely* a worthwhile thing, ignore what
anyone else says, even in a kind of "phantom" mode it really does
make a
difference, if you doubt me just demo one and use the X-Files: Fight The
Future and listen to the opening scene where the Neanderthals are mucking
about in the cave.

Is the unit worth the extra cash, on balance yes, but if I were looking to
buy right now I would probably wait, 7.1 is just around the corner and
Yamaha will probably pack their version of the Pronto with the next amp of
this calibre, so I'll need to get another bloody amp the bonus this time is
I get an extra Pronto which is good news!

The serial port is an interesting one and I have only got snippets of info
on it. Apparently in the home Asian markets it is linked to talk to HA
set-ups, but the feature is supposedly disabled in US and UK models, I
don't
know how or why, it just is supposed to be that way. In the manual it says
"RS232C/CTRL OUT +5V TERMINALS, these are expansion terminals for
commercial
use. Consult your dealer for details" , the 5V out refers to a
standard 3.5
mini jack and other than that it tells you zip! Wonder if I can get some
specs for it from somewhere and find out what it does?

K.

Do you have the AX1 then? Is the AX1 much of an improvement on the A1
(which
I have)? Is there any sort of programming or interface spec given for the
serial port on the back of the A1X?
