That is what I did with my lighting system, but it does have a few
drawbacks.

1) You need to know where each controller will be so you can run the cable.
2) Single point of failure
3) Smarter devices could show them selves with a web interface if they are
all on the subnet

I see no reason why a temperature controller can also use 1 wire and the
cost is going to be much cheaper. Also a lighting controller could also
have
local wiring after all if you want to fit a TCP/IP light switch it can also
control the lighting controller.
