XML & Byte Encoded XML

Ok I read a bit about XML now (Only a bit) from that I can see that
it is about describing data or content, and looks interesting,
perhaps I need to get a book and thoughts on one ?

What I have not found is anything on byte encoded XML which I would
think is going to be more of use to us, anyone got some examples I
could look at ?
