Most UPS's that I have seen use 12V batteries but run on 24VDC

ie. 2 x 12v batteries in series.

By doubling the voltage you half the current. This makes it much more
efficient.

Large commercial UPS's often run on 48V.

Also take a look at http://www.bkelec.com for low cost
inverters if you want
to get mains power in your car.
