I really would like to get away from the reliance on yahoo as well. This
list has been very flaky lately and I am getting a bit annoyed by all the
adverts (not to mention a marked increase in spam since the move from
egroups - this could be coincidence of course). I would have thought there
was some way to get a our own list server set up with no adverts, reliable
and faster posting and the ability to simply create and delete lists for
particular discussions. I have seen a lot of sites now seem to have some
form of 'forums' where an initial page shows each forum, the last posting,
number of messages etc and this seems a nice feature. If it is a question
of
server space, I have lots to spare on my server which is hosted on a 128K
connection, but I'm sure others can offer that too. I must admit that I
have
not had any experience at setting up lists but I'm sure there is plenty of
cheap/free software out there to do that. One thing I personally would like
though is to get all these 'linked' lists into a common place, I don't
really want to be setting up numerous accounts, and if there was a single
web based front page to all related lists then it might prevent some
duplicate postings. Also the ability to search across forums would be nice
along with some FAQ pages, we might even want to get some decent chat
functionality on there which was not dependent on IRC or yahoo or anyone
else. I reckon we could build up a nice little resource site for ourselves
that could further promote HA in the UK. What do you think ?

I was thinking....dangrous I know...

with all the talk of getting epods, ddar, air con, digital pix, cheap
memory etc, should we create a private list (I can donate a list) to
pool purchasing of said items without it being a public showing or
subjetc to our hosts rules.

Take the memory prices i listed today, i am happy to purchase on
behalf of others in return for simular help, like the ddar's. But i
can see that some suppliers would object about prices being shown in
public.

If there is interest i can create a list tomorow. how about it
ukha_buy@xxxxxxx !!

Any Ideas

John
