I'm happy to believe that the signal travels _down_ the CAT5 at, in round
terms, the speed of light. However, my question was whether there was any
kind of audible buffering going on "at the ends" that might have
caused
latency. I was hoping for the answer "no".

In answer to the "coming back", I'm not so worried about
"echo" from a
second system apart, since my mind is perfectly capable as processing this
as if it were a resonance characteristic of the space. The concern was more
about "pre-echo", in case I was going to here the
"real" source before the
"KAT5'd" one. This would have only occurred if there was enough
latency  in
the KAT5 product to exceed the speed of sound coming down ;-)
