Thanks for that.

I was wondering because I went round one of our local showhomes which had
been wired by on of these structured cabling companies with CAT5 and their
sockets were about as close to the mains socket as you could get??

If you have the CAT 5 socket mounted on a metal box then siting it next to
the mains socket should cause no problem, not right next to it say about
75mm away. You must run the CAT 5 cables away from the mains ones.

You should earth all metal boxes and fit rubber grommets, connecting it to
the socket is a good way to do this, don't forget the socket back box
should
also be earthed not just the earth connection on the back of the socket
itself.
