It can do multi-region, for details have a look at this web-site http://www.envytech.co.uk/dv88/. It also copes with RCE discs. Once the DVD Audio spec is ratified then an add-on board will be available. There is also a progressive scan upgrade due to be released any day now. Arcam are trying hard to get a licensing deal so that they can output progressive scan signals for PAL discs too - at the moment it is a no no. I did pop in to the local HiFi shop to have a look at the Arcam and the picture quality was outstanding. IMO better than the Pioneer 737, and that already has progressive scan.

I will be interested to see if the progressive scan upgrade makes any difference, as the Panasonic already converts any incoming signal to progressive scan. I suppose it all comes down to the quality of the converter used.

The reason I don't want to spend the money on an encoder is that I'm only intending to put together a test disc as an academic exercise. I use my HiFi to listen to music rather than provide background "Wallpaper music", so quality rules over convenience in my case. Who knows I might be wrong and may not be able to hear the difference between a raw CD and an mpeg encoded at 192k, and if that is the case then I will be happy to pay! I am more than a bit of an enthusiast - I've just increased the insurance on my Home Cinema to £22 grand!

Just an observation, you are spending thousands on kit, why are you not willing to consider spending a few quid on the software. I don't know that commercial software is necessarily any better but I would think that there might be something worth considering there. I didn't pay for my ripping/encoding software (I use AudioCatalyst) but I did pay the shareware fee for Tag & Rename which is a fantastic program for managing ID3 tags and MP3 filenames (really important when the collection gets pretty big). I would be very interested in any results from your experiments, also I' like to hear what you think of the DV-88 (can it do multi-region).

In a couple of days I'll be in a position to finally do a comparison of different bit-rates compared with original source material through a decent HiFi. I've ordered an Arcam DV-88 DVD player which will read CD-R, and CD-RW and works with mp3 discs.

I have a Meridian 561 processor, regarded as one of the best home DSP units, connected directly to the digital output of an Audiolab 8000CD player. I intend to connect the Arcam in the same way. Main speakers (KEF 104/2s) are bi-amped using 4 Audiolab 8000MX monoblocks. I also use a KEF 30B sub, with the crossover frequency controlled by the Meridian

I'll encode a variety of source material. In order to give mp3 the best possible chance I want to use the best encoder I can get my hands on without having to lay out any cash. Can anyone make any sensible suggestions?

Phil Harris is intending to come over and have a gander at my new Panasonic Plasma screen which is due to arrive on Monday. When he comes over we'll do some double blind tests, so perception doesn't get in the way.
