In the truest sense of the word i have spent some time working on a similar
project from a linux perspective.

With the aid of some perl, xml and sybase you can do some interesting
things.

I keep track of all my mp3s, vinyl and cds in a sybase database using a xml
DTD as the data type definition.  I use the XML as an appropriate text
format to keep the data in if I need to transform it into other formats,
e.g
onto my revo so i dont go and buy the same cd twice ;-)

Perl acts as the glue and allows access to the database via a web front end
but also allows me to start up xmms with randomized playlists created from
the sybase.  You might want to take a look at the xmms perl module
www.perl.com/CPAN/

Finally through a crontab it builds a playlist of tunes every morning that
is exactly 64mb in size to download onto my rio, and the list can be
massaged based on day of the week, musical style etc.  And yes before
anyone
asks I do actually only download only loud brash music on mondays just to
wake myself up from the weekend haze!

My jukebox has the graphical appearance of a classic Wurlizer and will
allow
unlimited creation of playlists. It looks great when displayed on a TV :-)

I dont use MP3 tags because I didnt really know about them at the time I
started ripping.

My collection is mostly Compilations and many of them dont appear on CDDB
anyway.

My MP3 files are called xxxyy.mp3 where xxx is the album number and yy is
the track number.

One interesting point to note when people are quoting how many Gb's of
mp3's
they have.... my database currently stores the info on

Total Albums 86
Total Artists 715
Total Tracks 1691
Total Songs 1305
MP3 Files 1305

Themes 7
Genres 27
Eras 7
Chart Entries 0
Playlists 0

I havent started to enter the Chart info or playlists yet but you will
notice that the number of songs is less than the number of tracks. This is
because of duplicates that are on several CD's. The current saving of 386
tracks not ripped is over 1Gb of space saved.

>From a song title I can return a list of all the Physical CD's that
contain
the track. I can then click on the title of the album to list all the
other
tracks on the album.

At any stage I can instantly play the MP3 file.

Future features will be the ability to create Audio or MP3 CD's from the
database so that I can create "The Best <whatever> Album At The
Time"

Searching can be done as follows.....

For the title Search, if less than 4 characters are entered then the
search
is for titles starting with the entered characters e.g. LOV will search
for
LOV* finding songs starting Love, Loving etc. If 4 or more characters are
entered the search will be for any title containing the entered string
e.g.
LOVE will return any song with Love anywhere in the title. If the entered
string contains any spaces it is automatically split and will search for
titles that contain ALL the entered words e.g. "LOVE WHAT" will
return
with
Tina Turner's "WHAT's LOVE  got to do with it?" etc.

The Artist search performs in a similar way with the primary search beingo
n
the Artist Surname/Groupname. Entering "JO" would return
"Elton JOHN, Tom
JONES" etc. If the entered string contains a "\" (backslash)
then the
search
is also performed on the Artist firstname.  "E\JO" will match
"Elton JOHN"


There is also a "Digital DJ" mode with 2 embeded media players at
the top
left and top right of the screen and a search page in the lower half. From
the listing returned by the search you can either LOAD a track into a
media
player and manually start it, or PLAY a track in a media player whereby it
will auto start.

I wish I'd had access to this technology when I was a DJ.... it would have
saved an awful lot of backache lugging 20 crates of records about :-)

One day I will post a demo version on the net when I get it to a stage
that
I am happy to let people play with.
