I have 10,000+ songs on my empeg and it only takes up about 1/3rd of the space (all ripped at Med/High VBR), mine's a 40Gb unit.  There is a kernel patch that will allow the empeg to stream its content over the web.  I am considering this as a possibility for WHA, etc (obviously single zone limitation).  Probably won't end up doing it as I think I'd like at least 2 zones.
