Yes you can buy standard cases and backplanes but then you are looking at £200-300 BEFORE you start to add any electronics into it. The whole concept of DIYHA is to create the high end functionality WITHOUT the high end costs.
 
I will look around to see what else is available thought.

Fantastic!  Thanks for the update Keith.  With regard to mechanical issues with the switching box, is it not possible to buy standard cases with backplanes, etc for purposes such as these?  I have no idea whether it is or not ...
