It's mostly because they have built in amplification.  You can just hook up
two speakers and away you go.  I haven't tried it's internal amp though.

Ironically I would like it to be bigger so it would fit in better with the
rest of my fi.

Have you seen the AudioTron/Gateway machine?

Tricky one. Where would the other sources be...node zero?

It SHOULD be able to do that within the next few version of the software.
It does have a "Radio" button on the remote already.
