I saw something on the discovery channel about a couple who had some=20
wierd and wonderful system (heat exchange) that used the lake (they were=20
rich!) in their garden(!!!!) to provide power along with solar panels. Itt
urned out that they could generate enough power for more than their=20
requirements and they ended up selling the unused power to the national=20
grid.. which gave them a nice little bit of income (probably pocket changet
o them) - in fact I think the money that they got for it enabled the=20
bloke to run his helicopter!!!

Guys, guys, guys,

Please do not talk about generates with me on line. I'm converting a=20
property at present that is not on the grid (as Dr. John might know). Costo
f connect to the grid is about =A320K, yes that 20,000 pounds. So I'm=20
currently up to my neck in working out power requirements, start-up loadeda
nd all of the rest. For a decent system (20kw+) with a good running lifei
f going to be around =A320K in itself (including oil tanks, installatione
tc etc). If I start looking at all of the latest technology, Combined=20
Heat and Power systems, mini gas turbines (yes seriously), fuels cells (asp
er the space shuttle), we're either talking vapour wear (but will be heari
n one year, honest guv) or =A330K minimum.

Personally, if you want a bit of reassurance at home for PC's and the likeI
would stick to a decent UPS and forget the generation side. You never=20
know, next time there's a black out you might find something else to=20
occupy you. I believe that in the seventies when there was all of the=20
power cuts due to strikes, nine months later there was a mini baby boom!

Regards
John Benfield
