Hi John,
Definately OTT.
Triacs are digital in that they are either OFF or Fully ON. There is a
known
voltdrop across MT1/MT2 and using the maximum current the power can be
calculated for the heatsink. There should be no danger of overheating as
the
heatsink should be the correct size.
If fan cooling was being used then there is an advantage in monitoring the
heatsink but not here. The last thing we want is to add fans n stuff !

1 rabbit -> 1 Pic -> several triacs
It looks as though I might have some spare pins so i was thinking...
what about mounting a 1 wire temp sensor on the heat sink and running
a short 1 wire bus though the triac boards. I could then shutdown a
channel which may be overloaded ? I am sure I will have enough code
space to knock up a 1 wire interface.
As I see it one problem might be the risk of a non isolated part on
the triac card, what do you think is this a bit of an OTT idea ?
