Note to self: stop asking questions, and then solving them 10 minutes
later!

The problem was that the desktop was only sending at 2Mb/s for some unknown
reason. I recently set up a couple of Tosh laptops with a w/less access
point for a mate. We had to change the spec of the laptops after they were
ordered, and as they came with built in (Orinoco) cards, I had a couple
left
over.

I usually use Compaq cards, (Intersil) which don't have great diagnostics.
Once I swapped it for a spare Orinoco card, I could see that the laptop was
sending at 11, but only receiving at 2!

A quick re-install of the driver at the desktop end solved the problem.
