My approach to HA announcements is using a crappy stereo FM transmitter
kit hooked up to a PC soundcard. This has the advantage of avoiding all
that cabling (far too lazy for that) and I can use cheap FM radios, hi
fi receivers, the car stereo etc for reception. The downside is that a)
it's totally illegal, and b) my nearest neighbour could probably receive
the transmissions were he so inclined.

For your application though, you could have a radio in the kids' room on
a timeswitch, or controlled by an appliance module. Mind you, you could
do that even if you went the wired route.
