I had similar problems with DHL... although in this case it was a business related shipment.  The originator in the States was supposed t pick up the duty costs etc (that was what they had ticked on the shipment label).  DHL delivered the goods & then sent me an invoice.  When I refused t pay, they said they would be unable t deliver any future packages t me.

 

I would guess that you don't have much choice about paying the fee.

Depends how much they want the tenner ;)

 

If it was me I would send them the vat and duty.

 

They will probably write it off, but if you end up in Jail, don't expect me t visit ;)

When they have your goods, not a lot you can do about it but complain and keep your fingers crossed.

Just got DHL paperwork for a couple of things I bought from the States. 

 

As well as VAT and Duty there is a £10 "Administration" fee for DHL.

 

Am I obliged t pay this?
