I have heard that the presence of microwave energy can induce currents in metallic objects which can cause sparking (see what happens if you put a cup/plate with a gold rim into a microwave), and hence the vapour explosion risk.

That's not the case, as far as I'm aware. I talked it through with a mate of mine who's the overal Design Manager for BP Europe's retail, and an engineer by profession. His view is that it's the vapour explosion reason.
