Nick,

That's not the case, as far as I'm aware. I talked it through with a mate of mine who's the overal Design Manager for BP Europe's retail, and an engineer by profession. His view is that it's the vapour explosion reason.

Regards.

On a slightly lighter note and hoping to clear up a misunderstanding, rather than cause an argument, I'd heard that the risk of explosion was not the reason why phones are "banned" on forecourts, but that communication between phone and network interfered with correct operation of the meter in the pump.  Or is that b****cks?

Yeh, and it is all typical c***p t keep someone in a job..

When you start your car, there is a bloody great spark generator in the starter motor. None I know off are sealed and all use brushes.

And what about all the other switch contacts you might use before moving off.

That's nothing to do with the emissions.

The problem that the Petroleum Regulations is dealing with is to do with handset batteries. If, as always seems to be the case with my phone, the battery is slightly loose, then there is the potential for a spark. Sparks + petrol fumes = explosions.

Now, to be fair, this has never happened on a European forecourt, but that was the thinking.
