Phil,

If your deteriorating aerial is on the roof then you could try this....

I had similar problem...our house is four floors high, and all the
aerial people in yellow pages said no way.
I phoned OnDigital and said that I had an aerial on high roof, but
reception was bad, they said fine, get the box and if it doesn't work
we will fix aerial.
Got the OnDigital box, put it in and immediately told them that it didn't
work.
They had t get specialist (who could cope with heights) who then
came and put up completely new aerial and cable for fixed price of
£40.

OK I have t also pay £10 per month for one year for the box, but
total cost is still less then getting new aerial.

Now signal is so strong I have t have 12db attenuation, otherwise
old video refuses t work!!

Martin

Can someone upload it again, please?

Hi John,

The Digiboard ones are great but pricey. www.digi.com

Check out the Brain Boxes cards. They have 2, 3, 4 and 8 port versions.
Nicely priced too. A 2 port PCI card is 129 quid from RS Components but you
can get them cheaper. Only 399 for the 8 port and comes with all the
popular
OS drivers.

A card with min of two ports needed, but more would be better.
Any suggestions? (of any kind)

Assuming is has a +5vSBY line (5 volts standby used to power the keyboard
and LAN card for WOL) you could build a small timer circuit that would fire
once when power was first applied to that after 5 seconds or so it would
operate a relay for 1 second thereby simulating the pressing of the on
button.

I've a PC i'd like t automate with X10 but the catch is it has an ATX
motherboard and a bios that won't override the powerswitch.

I had though of locking the powerswitch on but that just powers the machine
on and 5 seconds later off again.

Any suggestions ?

Good sound quality? Compared to what? An equivalently priced set of decent
boxes ... then no. Compared to a set of "micro" speakers ... then
not bad.

I've played with the Wharfedale "Loud Panel" speakers but not
with the NXT's
... the last time I heard the NXT's was a couple of years ago and they
were - well - garbage but I understand that they have inmproved and are
actually pretty good now. However the NXT's are not picture frame speakers
whereas the Loud Panels are.

IMHO the Loud Panels are an acceptable (even reasonable) compromise when
normal speakers are not an option ... we used a set at one time in our
boardroom at work to complement the wall mounted 40" plasma and they
had a
couple of pictures of the company offices in them ... were most acceptable.

Has anyone elses Sky digibox started loking up with a blue screen, and the
program info box across the bottom? Sound is still OK, but there's no
picture.

I too have had the same problem. I have had my sky digi box about 18
months,
the whole system seems t freeze up about once every two months, where
there
is no sound or picture just a blue screen. My solution was t disconnect
the
power lead from the back of the unit and then plug it in again after a few
seconds. Not an ideal soulution though.

I use an AM12 to power cycle the DodgyBox after crashes. Works very
well and I can do it from my armchair :)

Hi John,

The Digiboard ones are great but pricey. www.digi.com

Check out the Brain Boxes cards. They have 2, 3, 4 and 8 port
versions. Nicely priced too. A 2 port PCI card is 129 quid from RS
Components but you can get them cheaper. Only 399 for the 8 port and comes
with all the popular OS drivers.

Can anyone recommend any add-on cards?. I have looked at some, but
these all seem t be several hundred pounds?!?!
A card with min of two ports needed, but more would be better.
Any suggestions? (of any kind)

cheers

John

Hi,

I know I asked earlier but got no reply.

Are lamp modules ok for switching halogen lights (150W in my case)
and will they switch them up t the 300W limit.

It's just that it is getting dark soon and this light is going to
come on. I'd just like t sleep safe knowing some electrical
catastrophe isn't occurring in the loft where the lamp module lives.

Mark.

Any chance of running these again for June? We all know it's a foregone
conclusion that Messrs Harris and Gordon have the top slots...

Providing the halogen lights are mains operated and that they don't have
any dimming units attached, yes t both. Look out for obvious sign of
trouble with flickering light intensity.

It would be much better t use AM12U Appliance Modules to control them.

As long as they are MAINS VOLTAGE halogens you can treat them as a normal
bulb. Its only Non-filament (eg flourescent or sodium) and transformer
loads
that need relay switching.

While I cannot give you any guidelines on which one t buy, I can tell you
not t but "Smart Homes for Dummies" it's crap. There is nothing
in it that
you won't learn from lurking on this list, reading the archives &
asking a
few questions.

My copy is beginning to look out of date, and is decidedly US biased in
terms
of the products it mentions.

Funny you should mention that, I've sacrificed the Lava lamp's AM12 to
perform this very task.
