I quite often get mails delivered twice (or more). It happens if some kind
of error occurs when they're being downloaded. I leave a copy of my
messages
on the server for 3 days, so I can also read them at work, and when it
happens I get 3 days worth delivered all over again.

It was a real problem, so in the end I wrote a small VB App that would scan
a mail folder and remove any duplicate messages - very useful when there's
hundreds of them!
