I have two split 9,000BTU units that are destined to be built int the end wall of my 9' 6" x 8' x 17' garage when I convert it to being an AV room ... one would be more than enough except for the fact that one of my external power amps runs hot enough to leave a mark if you touch the heatsinks! I think cooling this lot is going to be more than enough of a problem - which is why I want to find some way of controlling them from HomeVision because I will need HV to keep an eye (?) on the temperature in the room even when no-one is using it and to switch on the AC if necessary to keep everything at a comfortable temperature.

It seems as sound resistant as the double-glazed window, you would hear a loud noise but ambient background noise seems t be absorbed by the mechanism.  The unit has an ability t cool to 8500 btu and heat t the same, so in winter there is no need to turn on the fan. 

 

This unit is covering an area of 14' by 9' and an adjacent node 0 of 12' by 6'.  With four computers and associated peripherals in full operation it seems t be maintaining an unbearable 19 degrees.

My garage has a 2ft x 1ft window which I have to remove to get the garage completely light tight ... if you stand at one side of the wall and call out can you hear through the unit?

This unit seems t be in a different league t the monobloc from B & Q, it's turned the room and neighbouring corridor in t a freezer compartment in the space of two hours.  Noise wise, almost silent inside with a light humming on the exterior, you could easily sleep through it even on full power.

 

The big headache will be how t install it through the brick wall.  I have the mounting kit but I think it will be a good challenge t chop out a 2ft by 1ft slot in a double-brick wall (time t check the insurance).  Wickes seem t have a surplus of these things in the Hertfordshire area, which may be a bad sign.

Actually this is a sensible comment but badly put ... those single unit ACs were originally intended for installation in US windows (similar t our ols sash windows) hence the name window rattlers. They had the reputation for being unefficient, noisy and only lasting a couple of years. These ones *MAY* be different but again as effectively a single unit AC I'd be wary...

After the earlier problems the Homebase unit is going back, just wasn't up t the job.  I have now found a unit at Wickes that is designed for through-wall mounting.  Has anyone experience of these units and imparticular variations on the mounting options?
