New Sky box

There has been an awful lot of discussion regarding the new Sky box on the Sky newsgroups. A lot of it is supposition, but we've als had the pleasure of speaking with a number of Sky insiders who have released more information than is available through official channels.

To answer a number of questions that have arisen today:

The box records the data stream from the transponder and does nothing to it.

When you play back the recording it decodes it as if it was a live transmission.s your card must be authorised to view that channel at that particular time. If you had for example subscribed to the Movie channels for a month over Christmas and recorded lots of films, you will not be able t watch them in January if you are no longer subscribed.

There are plans to introduce a new form of Box Office, which will allow you to "download" a film, and either watch it a set number of times, or watch it an unlimited number of times in a set period.

Again, on the Quad LNB - the Sky plus box will require two of the outputs s you can watch and record at the same time. The two spare outputs are designed s you can attach additional receiver boxes to the LNB at a subsidised price. Whether you will be allowed to use two Sky plus boxes or not I don't know.

There was lots of other noise on the newsgroups, with rumours of a subsidy for those who had paid full price for their original Sky tuners. If you want more information I suggest visiting news:uk.media.tv.sky (I think)

Tim.
