Before I begin the process of RFD submission t uk.net.*, I would be
grateful if people could have a read through my draft RFD (at end of
message) and make any comments they feel relevant.
First time I have tried to create a newsgroup so be gentle :)
Thanks,
Mark.
REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
create unmoderated newsgroup uk.tech.home-automation

uk.tech.home-automation Discussion of Home Automation in the UK
This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a
UK-wide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup uk.tech.homeautomation
*** ALL DISCUSSION MUST TAKE PLACE IN UK.NET.NEWS.CONFIG ***
This is not a Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time.

Rationale uk.tech.home-automation
Home automation in the UK has an expanding following of both
users and suppliers. Recent increases in media attention to
Home Automation and announcements by some major companies
in other markets (such as Orange) to move into this area are likely
to further interest in this technology.
The global newsgroup currently dedicated to discussion of Home
Automation is comp.home.automation. However, this group is heavily
US biased and often UK specific topics are missed or answered with a
US bias that does not apply to the UK market. There are a number of
differences in products and standards between the US and UK markets,
while many US suppliers will not supply directly to the UK rendering
much of the discussion redundant to UK users and suppliers.
This has caused UK discussion to move onto a number of message boards
and mailing lists which drasticically fragments discussion and
distribution of the knowledge of UK Home Automaters. With some of
these mailing lists generating well in excess of 100 mailings a day,
it becomes increasingly difficult to continue discussion based on
these systems.
This news group would allow people interested in Home Automation
throughout the UK t have a common place to discuss this topic.
Charter uk.tech.home-automation
The group exists for the purpose of discussion of all topics related
to Home Automation in the UK. The group covers technical discussion
of installation, configuration, troubleshooting and design of
hardware and software products used in Home Automation.
Advertising
Advertising is forbidden, with these exceptions:
Suppliers of goods and services relevant to Home Automation in the UK
may post an invitation to visit their web site or request details.
It should be of four lines or fewer and not posted more than once
every 3 months. The subject line should begin "ADVERT: ",
except for vacancy adverts, when it should begin "JOB: ".
Binaries & Formatting
Encoded binaries (e.g. pictures, compressed files, etc.) are
forbidden. Such material belongs on a web or FTP site t which
a pointer may be posted. Cryptographic signatures (e.g. PGP)
may be used where authentication is important and should be as
short as possible.
Posts must be readable as plain text. HTML, RTF and similarly
formatted messages are prohibited. To see how to make some
common newsreaders comply with this, read
<http://www.usenet.org.uk/ukpost.html>.
Warning
Anyone posting contrary to this charter may be reported to their
"postmaster" and/or Service Provider.
