I'll have a
go
at these suggestions - particularly lugging the old Sony Dolby amp down t
the
source again and using a patch cord. Should eliminate a lot of
possibilities.
I am fairly
sure there is not a 180 degree phase shift as I checked this straight away
-
the stereo image is fine as well. (there is a patch panel involved and I
could
have had a lapse at the wiring stage (or a beer or five). they are a
tedious
job t wire).
I am however
a
bit skeptical on the source (Tivo) as the Nicam decoding is an ongoing
problem
t them, the material I have used is existing stuff though plus a new
recording.
On a tech
point
- if say the low frequencies were phase shifted by an amount different t
the
high frequencies - but by the same on both L/R channels would this screw up
the matrix decoding for the Dolby surround ?? It may well be that the Tivo
introduces this (even when you watch your TV live with a Tivo it is
encoded, recorded and replayed, hence the 3 sec delay).
I assume
from
Phils' response he is using Dolby Pro Logic surround (analogue) with no
problems and from his experience in this area he would I'm sure have
noticed
any problems , particularly as bad as this.

There
shouldnt be any phase shift problems at all.
Have
you
tried with the two units in the same room just using a patch cord
?
The
only
reason I can think of is that you have one of your cable pairs reversed
which would put that channel 180 degrees out of phase.
Both
audio circuits are identical.
Pairs t
check are BLUE/White and GREEN/White
Reversals on Video pairs will result in no
picture.
Are
there any differences in Audio level between
Left/Right?
What
happens if you feed a mono source into both inputs?

Dolby Surround and KAT5
Is anyone else using Dolby Surround and KAT5 t gether
?
I am experiencing very different surround effects over the KAT5 t
the (non extended) sound... Particularly the general 'drone' that one
tends t always get from the rear channels is hugely increased t the
point of major distraction. Length is 30m.
The
frequency response and 'clarity' of an ordinary stereo source seem
fine.
Is
there any possibility that phase shifts in the two audio channels are
causing this ? Particularly if they were frequency dependant phase shifts
?
Kevin
PS Should post this in the KAT5 discussion group I guess but
my user/password is setup on another machine that I haven't unpacked yet -
sorry.
