Thanks for all the info Rich.

It looks like it's more effort than it's worth, but I just couldn't bear
to=
see it go in the skip ;-)

Hi Neil,

Sorry, by pods I mean the communication adaptors t get your PC t ta=
lk t the PLC - Quite a few manufacturers PLC's require this adaptor
normal=
ly t adapt RS232 t RS485 (normally a butchered version) or t their own
c=
omms standard (ie Siemens - MPI for the S7 series, Allen Bradley PIC
adapto=
rs for the "bottom range" t 1000 UKP adaptors for the higher
end)

I have used PLC's in the past to do things around the house, I've sti=
ll got a 160 I/O PLC sat on the stairs for me t find some way of
interfaci=
ng its I/O t the homevision. I found because of their way of thinking (ie
=
you have to develop everything from scratch and some don't have a realtime
=
clock) even through I can write their code (Rung Ladder Logic normally,
but=
statement list for the Siemens) without thinking, the Home vision is much =
better because it nativally understands IR, timeing and compensates for
the=
changing time of dusk etc.

The last two houses I've been in have had PLC installs but in this cu=
rrent house I've not bothered and stuck t the HV. Quite irronic when I
hav=
e several boxes of PLC's sat about "for me t get around tuit"!
(and I own =
the software and the various pods t talk t the creatures!)

Regards

Rich (Who has put this out t the list as it may be of interest to =
others who may be considering a PLC)

Thanks Rich

I'll see what I can find out in work...if they had the unit, they shoul=
d have the disk / manual / lead anyway!

I don't understand what you mean by by pods? this has a row of input an=
d output terminals that can be wired t relays etc.

thanks
Neil

I've spent the last 3 years as a Automation/Software engineer program=
ming a range of PLC's

Mitsi, Tele, AB, Siemens.

One of the problems is the cost of the pods required t talk t them.

I will ask at my old work place (I resigned from my current work plac=
e yesterday, so I'm not going t get any help from them!) for the serial
ca=
ble details.

Documentation and software might be an issue. There is a chance there=
might be an old licance/documentation hanging arround.

What PLC's are you used t programming? I might be able t come acros=
s an old box that you might be more familular with.

Regards

Rich

Has anyone used a PLC for automation at home? I've rescued an old T=
elemecanique TSX-17 off the scrap pile in work and I am looking for
documen=
tation and software t program it from my PC.
Can anyone provide ANY useful information / experiences with PLC's?

thanks
Neil
