WiFi is the standard. If you want to run an ad-hoc network make sure that
they can run 802.11b Ad-hoc. Wi-fi should guarantee this though.

I would imagine there might be problems between manufacturers.
I have seen the "WiFi" logo on quite a few new product reviews
(Dan gave me
this useful site http://www.practicallynetworked.com)
and from what others
have told me this seems to be certification that they are interoperable?
Someone who has experience of this stuff will know a lot more than me.
