Subject: RE: [ukha_d] Re: Wireless (again)
We've just ordered some "No Wires Needed" (and that's a brand!)
kit for the
project, after the people who Breezecom's UK sales office put us in touch
with repeatedly didn't return our phone calls. Total cost is about 3 grand.
The MD has decided he wants the wireless kit setup so he can go between
offices and meeting rooms, and we've just discovered the card makes his old
Compaq laptop's speakers make a buzzing noise when it accesses the net....!
You must remember that there are only two chipsets in the market. The
majority of the cards contain the PRISM chipset, so if one brand makes it
buzz, others are. I've been through it all, AND I have had the help of some
guys I am working with in the US on wireless WANs, and they have access to
information which is not public domain. Ordering kit from a different
manufacturer means that you will more likely than not end up with kit which
is based on the same hardware, but with a different brand name on the
outside, hence the Lucent, Evansys and other manufacturer's cards looking
identical. Just ask Ant - he works in the business. Whatever you buy make
sure you get external antennae. You may have to put in more than one access
point to get coverage through the whole office.
Tim.
