No, I had the same thought myself.

This is a (known) problem when UT is finding game servers: it sends out
something like 1200 pings which can hit the limits on a firewall.

Even web or email traffic can hit the gameplay pretty hard, and another
game (Quake III) causes the same increase in lag.
