My point exactly!

Sounds like your wife/partner is annoyed by the Christmas tree control
instead of being freed from worring about it.  She is being
"constrained by
the controller" in your words.

Obviously I wasn't suggesting "automatic" control of every
appliance in your
house.  However, the Christmas tree thing is an ideal candidate (in my
house
anyway) and needs no user input at all.
