The new PC I bought as my HA central PC appears to have a problem with the
drive. It's current main usage is a MP3 jukebox until I invest in some X10
bits. It's fine in operation but whenever I do a scandisk, it stops 3/4 of
the way through the scan and doesn't recover, always on the same sector.
The
only solution is to powerdown twice. Twice because after the first
powerdown
it doesn't recognise the IDE drive. Second time, boots no problem.
I got a copy of Spinrite which appears more sophisticated and it ran
through
without a problem, although it took 19 hours :-( When I ran scandisk
immediately following spinrite, it failed at the same spot as before.
The disk is a 40GB IDE and although I've got the 30GB of MP3s backed up to
CDR, I'm always fiddling with the MP3 tags etc on the disk and would hate
to
loose the changes. I'd also like to de-frag the disk but de-frag won't run
until the scandisk problem is resolved.
Any ideas ? Is the disk about to fail or are there any other utilities I
can
use to fix scandisk.
TIA
Don
