At the risk of this already being covered in your assumptions:-

Soft start lighting and all switches allowing transmission as well as
reception

A flexible addressing system to avoid neighbourhood collisions -  if it is
mass produced affordable etc, we don't want to have the addressing
limitations of X10's housecode system. Perhaps each node could have a
unique address (like MAC addressing) instead of set your own addresses.

Possible TV control (many people already have TVs in their bedrooms and
would appreciate an on screen view, probably with control on each TV)


Aaaahhhh.... just thought, you're doing this over CAT5 likely aren't you,
not mains signals.... oh well, the second one is not that applicable then!
