The only reason I asked is that I've just had to do a reinstall on a twin
pentium machine - once NT was installed I could hardly do anything before
I got the same error as you had. Once I'd installed the matrox display
drivers and reinstalled SP6a (NT4) it became more stable but I still had
problems. Eventually I tracked it down to 'the wrong version of hal.dll'
and once I'd replaced it everything became stable.

Not this particular one. However, my main server is running on an ABIT BP6
with 2 x Celeron 533's, and this also has the HPT366 controller.
The main disks in that machine are Wide-SCSI, but since big IDE disks are
som much cheaper that their wide-SCSI equivalents, I also put in a 20GB
ATA-66 drive on the HPT366. While it all "works", this machine
does freeze
on a reasonably regular basis, which I also attribute to the HPT366.
Basically, I agree that these Highpoint controllers are CR*P, and don't
want
anything more to do with them. I've ordered a Promise ATA-100 card from
Dabs, which I'll put in the Jukebox machine in the next few days (probably
at the weekend).
I'll let you know howI get on...
