Re: Microphones

I imagine that it's the fact that the mic is of a decent quality that makes it expensive, not the fact that it's ceiling mounted. In fact, I suppose you can probably mount it wherever you want - though high-up is probably better.

I find myself in a similar position. It's a lot of money to spend just to "try out" something which you may or may not decide to expand further. That said, I'm not sure how important the limiter/gates actually are in a set-up - and cutting them out would probably cut a zero off here or there from the price.... Presumably if you've only got a few mics (or even just one for testing) you wouldn't require a limiter at all. Even so, if a minimum set-up is the beautiful 8-channel RM81 from LetsAutomate + a ceiling microphone you're still talking about £220 just to see what kind of results you're going to get.

Personally, I'm planning to buy a couple of Maplin condenser mics and a cheap (£20 or so) passive mixer to put together a simple little set-up and see what kind of results I can get. Then, if I'm feeling lucky, I can expand it later with a decent mixer and the ceiling mics with phantom power.

Am I making any sense here? Hmmm. Probably no less than usual, anyway.

Oliver.

Its a lot of money to waste if it does not work, I know the mike on the PC
is not very good. Any ideas why the ceiling mikes are so expensive?
