The whole Genie "upgrading" thing has been a disaster. I got fed
up
with the problems too and mailed them. After several standard FAQ type
responses I eventually got a reply, presumably from a real thinking
human being, that said they were having a lot of problems, and that the
email to SMS facilities would be down until further notice.
A friend of mine was using them as their main ISP, but had so many
problems getting email, or sometimes just logging in, that they've
changed providers.
What's even more annoying is their continuing huge advertising campaign
to attract new customers - they won't know what they're letting
themselves in for....
Even worse, Unimobile, who I had hoped would be a decent alternative to
Genie have just mailed me to say they're suspending the free email to
SMS service to concentrate on "providing wireless data solutions for
enterprises" :{
There are a couple of other alternative, but I'm not sure how reliable
they are. Yahoo used to work, but I can't seem to get anything through
them now. Uboot seems to work OK, but you have to have the senders
address in your "accept" list (which might suit a lot of people
anyway).
I'm actively looking for a solution to this, so I'll update you if I
find anything better.
