Keychain remote KR19E

Has anyone else got one of these.. I'm having terrible trouble changing
the House and unit codes. this is whay happens
1. I Press and hold the top ON button
the led flashes load of times, then flashes once and 3 seconds later one
more flash
2. I release the top on button.
3. I then press the top on button 3 times on the third time I keep it
held down
each time I press it the led flashes load of times. On the lasty press
(when I keep it held down) the led flashes load of times, then flashes
once and 3 seconds later one more flash
Effectively the house/unit code doesn't change... I must be a complete
moron... has anyone got an idiot proof way of doing this??
btw I *am* following the enclosed instructions!!
