Confused me and I know what its all about.

Forget the fact that the wire is normally black, it should actually be red
or sleeved with red, its simply the outgoing side of the switch to the
lamp,
hence switched live.

Andy, it sounds like someone has messed around with the wiring to the
switch
you should not have a brown wire, get an electrician to check it and the
rest of the house. For the time being connect your switch using brown as
live, if its the wrong way round it will still work, the electrician can
then sort it.
