Perhaps their frequency response is wider.  The TSOP1838 used in Nigel's IR
circuit is most responsive at 38kHz, with response tailing off either side.
That said, it will probably work at 36-40kHz, but the range will not be as
good at frequencies further away from 38kHz.

Also, the transmitter part of the circuit is a simple 38kHz oscillator - so
it will always transmit at 38kHz (give or take the tolerances of the
components used, operating temperature etc.)
