The Pace also tends to screw up in voice applications (though your experience may be different. I use Win2k, which might not help). I ended up ditching my Pace as it wouldn't work reliably with any voicemail applications. I now use a Diamond SupraExpress 56e Pro which, whilst not supporting UK CLI, works just fine in every other respect. I'm using WinIVR (from http://www.cecam.co.nz) for voicemail.
 
I don't think there's anything else available, other than the Hayes.

I believe a couple of people on here use a hayes modem. I use a pace, but
you'll have trouble getting one of them, they have gone bust.
