For home I use http://www.dyndns.org/
which gives me quite good service

You are open to attack whenever your computer is connected to the internet
:/ The biggest problem with being on 24/7 is that you become an
identifiable
target for script kiddies or someone who holds a grudge.

Does your router not support NAT which helps a lot?

As to server software, thats really down to personal choice, if you don't
have a lot of knowledge with Linux, then I would suggest NT4 and IIS, but
you would really need to apply all the patches from Microsoft and get on
their adisory list for new exploits/patches.
