Probably wont blow anything up as the controllers only contain a PIC
chip, some triacs and dropper capacitor/resistor to supply power to
the PIC.

On the downside, as you dim it the voltage will become insufficient
to operate the PIC and it will end up with the PIC crashing or
stopping. When the voltage is increased, it may reset normally in
which case it will be just as if you had turned the power off, or it
may freeze in which case YOU will have to turn the power off then on.

I have the same problem with a Comet style decoration. It needs 7
presses to get to the scene I want. Default is all lights on but
shimmering, occasionally when it comes on it is with the plinky
plonky muzak playing GRRR!!!!

I am going to remove the controller and wire it to a 4 channel Disco
controller that I am using for some other lights.
