Hmmm, I would think if your line was a busy one and you were switching mains voltages the relay wouldn't last too long. Cheap though.
 
I bought some relays today for detecting on hook, off hook and maybe ringing. Look out for web site updates over the hols when I hope to have some time to play.
 
Lots of volts both ac and dc in a phone line so keep those fingers away......

This is a little late, but.....
 
I have just seen this on the web, looks like it will do what you want it to, and it only costs a tenner
 
 
There is a circuit diagram in the documentation.

For just ring detection there is about a 100 quid difference and the fun of
making it.
