An AVR is the Atmel micro offering. It is similar in many ways to the PIC
and better but there is not as much out there on the web since it has not
been around for as long. The main difference is the instruction cycle is
1/4
of the PIC speed so a 4 MHz PIC has an instruction clock running at 1 MHz.
The AVR is 1 to 1 so 4 times quicker for the same clock speed (all things
being equal). They also tend to be better specified but I have not got onto
them yet so cannot comment really.
