Could be worriying to find my HA server "Out To Lunch" ;)

Still, interesting - you could set the online state depending upon what the
server is doing (Busy, On the Phone) Or change the name string to give you
extra information...

Getting quite excited about it now!  Time to dig out the API.

And as you say, this could be used as a generic application to interface
online with any service on any PC that has an API...

Security is still quite an issue though - especially since the MSN uses a
3rd party service.  There was a spate of MSN hacking a while back where
users joined into your conversations and attempted to send files.

So long as the messanging client in question has an accessable programming
interface, then I see no reason why ANY service shouldn't be able to be
used
in this way...
