It depends how techy you are feeling

If you split x10 down into its basic functions, i.e you can use wall modules to control appliances, and then you can add to this direct replacements for wall switches, then installing the basic kit is dead easy.

You can then move onto using hardwired kit, that requires the house to re wired to allow for their use, then you are talking big changes.

The control of these is the real issue, you could use a computer interface, such as Homeseer (www.homeseer.com)

or a dedicated controller such as Homevision, or patch it in with an alarm system like Comfort

or something as simple as a remote control (such as the Philips pronto)

it really depends how complex you want to go.

But to install basic kit you don't need an installer.

Have a browse around:

and they should give you an idea of what's around.

Everyone has a different slant on this one, and it really depends upon what you want to achieve!

Regards

Daniel

I‘m considering using X10-based home automation.

Is it possible to “do it yourself” or is it a must to use integrator
sub-contractor? (I have basic technical and electrical skills).

If I decide to do it myself – what is the best way (books/documentation,
starter kits etc.)?

What is the best X10-based system (for all classical functions:
security, HVAC, A/V, lighting and shutters, home LAN integration)?
